One thing that I found interesting was the section that talked about, “what to look for when you look at communication” I liked Hymes model that he made and find it useful. The ethnography of communication is an interesting approach to looking at things, but it really makes sense. Since it is talking about what we look for when observing communication. He has the models for the context for observing communication, and the elements of communication. I found it interesting that in the elements of communication the main words spell Speaking. It makes it appropriate since that is what communication has to mainly do with. Situations, participants, ends, act sequences, keys, instrumentalities, norms, and genres are all things to look for when observing communication. With his contests for observing communication, all the steps fit in with each other and it flows well together. It makes it easy to see what to observe, and when you think about it, without knowing what they are, you do actually do all of those and sometimes more when observing communication.
I also liked the Hymes S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G model. According to the book, Hymes was driven by the view that "in order to speak a language correctly, one needs not only to learn its vocabulary and grammar, but also the context in which words are used." This is especially true when visiting another part of the world. For example thumbs up where we live is a good thing, but in Iran it means something much different. Also, french fries are considered chips in Europe. I appreciate how Hymes breaks down communication into what originally was sixteen components but then was broken down to just eight. This shows how complex communication is and how important it is to consider every aspect of it.
ReplyDeleteHello Roro,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you talked about observing communication because it does form an essential part in the way we communicate with others. When we see people speak, we actually do observe how they speak because throughout the way people speak we react. If a speaker says things that do not make sense and is unprofessional then the audience will react in a negative way or without interest. When someone speaks, they need to give their speech with norms in a professional way. When a speaker is truthful and shows emotion to their speech, the audience will react in a positive way because they will connect with the speaker.
